Obituary for James R. Lucas

James R Lucas, 87, of Indianapolis, walked into eternity with Jesus on Sunday, July 7th, 2019. He was born October 30th, 1931 in Indianapolis to Chester and Margaret (Cravens) Lucas. He married Beth B. (Minnich) Lucas on August 31, 1952. He was a lifetime resident of Indianapolis.

Jim is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Beth Lucas of Indianapolis; four loving children, Jan L Lucas of Indianapolis, Jamalyn (Bill) Miller of New York, William "Buz" Brown of Indianapolis, and Joy B (Vernon) Lucas-Brown of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, James Christopher Miller of Seattle, Washington, Justin Randall Brown of Indianapolis, Dr. Durriell Brown of Texas, Jordan Elizabeth (Joshua) Beasley of Heritage, Tennessee, Jizelle Marie Miller of Marion, Jaylan Noelle Miller of Marion; four great grandchildren, Lillian Jay Beasley, Layla Joy Beasley, Kennedy M Brown, and Vera Brown; and one sister Marjorie Shipley. Jim is preceded in death by both of his parents and one son, Jay Lucas.

Jim was a 1949 graduate of Decatur Central High School where he was inducted into the Decatur Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985 and the National Honors Society in 1949. He received his Bachelors from Indiana Central (U Indy) and his Masters degree from Butler University. He served in the Army during the Korean War and Honorable discharged in 1955. Jim was a high school math teacher for Decatur Central High School. He was also the coach for Basketball, Cross Country and Track. He also taught Driver's Education. He was an active member of the Avon Community Church of God. He enjoyed working with slot cars. He loved to restore old cars and working with wood, tile and concrete. Jim organized and played in basketball tourneys for several years and was a true animal lover.

Family and friends may show their love and support from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, July 15th and 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday July 16th at Jones Crossing, next door to Jones Family Mortuary in Mooresville. There will be a celebration of life service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16th at Jones Crossing.
